I was full of enthusiasm and for a while, my business\nwas very successful. I made good money until the market started to change a few\nyears later and I didn\u00b4t have many sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">After a year of struggling to keep the business afloat financially, I lost my enthusiasm and gave up. In addition, I had to file a lawsuit against the municipality where I was doing business. It was a very challenging time for me professionally, but I learned some valuable lessons that I was able to apply to my next business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>First Insight: You need to set up clear processes for your\nbusiness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">A few years later, I was\noffered a position as CEO of another real estate company. This company had a\ntotally different business model and was quite successful. I realized that my\nfirst business had failed because I didn\u2019t have clearly defined processes that\nI could repeat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\" class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Second Insight: A vision statement helps you to stay focus on your\ngoals<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">In the process of\nfamiliarizing myself with this new company, I read and analyzed their\nlong-term&nbsp;vision statement. I wondered about the purpose of having a\nvision statement and the company\u2019s owner clarified that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The&nbsp;main purpose of a vision statement&nbsp;is to describe the big vision, the ultimate goals the company wants to achieve. <\/li><li>A vision statement helps you to see the context and bigger picture of your business. For example, you will have clarity about where you want the business to be in one, three, five or even ten years.<\/li><li>Without this clear roadmap, you will likely give up when things start to become difficult.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The Great Value of a Vision Statement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years later, I experienced\nthe great value of this vision statement when business got tough. Everyone in\nthe company was nervous about the future and potential job losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">The business owner and I\ncalled a meeting and we started addressing the current challenges. After I had\nmade a short introduction, the business owner made a very passionate speech\nabout the mission of the company, its values, goals, and long-term vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">That speech instantly changed\nthe energy and anxiety in the room. It was very powerful to observe. This\nexperience of shifting your mindset and gaining clarity is part of why I\u2019m supporting\nother business owners as a coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">Indeed, a few months later the\ncompany was profitable again. I\u2019m still impressed and grateful that I could witness\nsuch a powerful shift firsthand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Create a Clear Roadmap<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, I\u00b4ve created a\nroadmap for each of my new companies, which includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Drafting a clear vision and mission\nstatement.<\/li><li>Defining the company\u2019s values and\ngoals.<\/li><li>Envisioning what the company\u2019s future\nin one, three and five years.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">Such a roadmap provides the right\nfocus so I can master any challenge. It helps me to see the bigger picture of\nmy business and its potential.
