This is a 2&#215;2 grid, with one square for each of the four aspects of SWOT.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Use\u00a0brainstorming techniques to build a list of ideas about where your company currently stands. Every time you identify a Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, or Threat, write it down in the relevant part of the grid.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Strengths <\/strong>and<strong> Weaknesses<\/strong> are internal factors \u2013 for example, the company\u00b4s assets, processes, and people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Opportunities <\/strong>and <strong>Threats<\/strong> are external factors, arising from your market, your competition, and the wider economy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #00ccff;\"><strong>The SWOT analysis applied:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Hand out pads of sticky-notes and have everyone quietly generate ideas and write them down. These are areas where the business needs to improve to remain competitive: weak brand, higher-than-average turnover, high levels of debt, an inadequate supply chain, lack of capital, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Opportunities\u00a0<\/strong>refer to favorable external factors that could give a company a competitive advantage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Threats\u00a0<\/strong>refer to factors that have the potential to harm a company. Common threats include rising costs for materials, increasing competition, tight labor supply, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #00ccff;\"><strong>What questions can you ask as part of your analysis?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Strengths<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Strengths bring your company a clear advantage. This is within your control.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What values drive your business? What is your company\u00b4s Unique Selling Proposition (USP)?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What competitive advantages has your company compared to other companies? Example: the motivation of your staff.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What strengths might your competitors see in your company?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What assets do you have in your team, such as knowledge, education, network, skills, and reputation?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What physical assets do you have, such as customers, equipment, technology, cash, and patents?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Weaknesses<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Now it&#8217;s time to consider your company\u00b4s weaknesses. Be honest and realistic, and face any unpleasant truths as soon as possible. A SWOT analysis will only be valuable if you gather all the information you need. Your focus should be on your people, resources, systems, and procedures. You might need to improve on them to be competitive.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What could you improve? What practices should you avoid?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">How do other people in your market perceive you? Conduct a survey or interviews.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Do others notice weaknesses that you tend to be blind to?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">How and why are your competitors doing better than you?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What are you lacking?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What business processes need improvement?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Opportunities<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Opportunities are openings or chances for something positive to happen. Being able to spot and exploit opportunities can make a huge difference to your company\u00b4s ability to be successful.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What developments might arise in the market you serve?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What interesting market trends are you aware of, large or small, which could have a positive impact that will encourage people to buy more of what you are selling?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Are there upcoming changes to regulations that might impact your company positively?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">If your business is up and running, do customers think highly of you?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Threats<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Threats are external factors that you have no control over. You may want to consider putting in place contingency plans for dealing with them if they occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What threats can you anticipate and take action against?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What obstacles are you facing to sell your product?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What are your competitors doing?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Do you have potential competitors who may enter your market?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Will suppliers always be able to supply the raw materials you need at a reasonable price?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Could future developments in technology change how you do business?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #00ccff;\"><strong>How to use a SWOT analysis<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Once you&#8217;ve examined all four aspects of SWOT, you&#8217;ll likely be faced with a long list of potential actions to take. You&#8217;ll want to build on your strengths and exploit every opportunity and minimize the weaknesses and threats. B<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">efore you take any action, look for potential connections between the quadrants of your matrix and ask yourself:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>How could I use my strengths to open up new opportunities in my business? <\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Now prioritize your ideas. Refine each point to make your comparisons clear. For example, only accept precise, verifiable statements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #00ccff;\"><strong>What are your next steps after the SWOT analysis is done?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Start to look at your strengths and figure out how you can use those strengths to take advantage of your opportunities. Then, determine how your strengths could combat the threats. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Use this analysis to produce a <strong>list of actions<\/strong> that you can take and ask yourself:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>What do I want to accomplish each month moving forward?<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">With your goals and actions in hand, you\u2019ll be a long way toward completing a strategic plan for your business. Now, you\u2019re ready to convert it into a real strategy.
